"Waalhaven, Zingography By Herman Frederik Bieling"
Bieling was a Dutch artist who worked in the Rotterdam area. He produced paintings, sculptures, and prints. HB was particularly known for his use of "Bieling Blue," a bright, dark blue. In 1917, Bieling founded an art group called De Branding (The Surf or The Breakers in Dutch). Other members included Laurens van Kuik, Ger ladage (aka Gerwhl), Bernard Toon Gits, Jan Sirks, and Wim Schmacher. Their goal was to exhibit and promote new modern art in the Netherlands. They had many connections with other art groups, including De Stijl and Der Sturm. Bieling organized many exhibitions of modern art. These shows included paintings by himself and many modern artists, including Otto Gleichmann, Kurt Schwitters, Constantin Brâncuic, and Piet Mondriaan. Waalhaven is a dock in the harbor of Rotterdam. The engraving was printed on recycled paper (sheet from an ornamental book). It is titled lower left and signed and dated lower right: Bieling 22.
