"Dayak Shamanic Ritual Bowl “aso”"
The Dayak, the indigenous people of Borneo in Indonesia and Malaysia, have a rich tradition of shamanism. Their shamans, often called "belian" or "dukun," play a crucial role in healing, protection rituals, and communication with nature spirits. Shamanism is an integral part of their spiritual culture and their connection to their environment. Black wooden bowl, organically stretched in shape, with a shallow interior and gently sloping sides that rise to form a double lip at one end. The handle is in the shape of an "Aso," a stylized dragon figure whose name in the Kayanic language means "dog." It actually evokes the power of the dragon and requires delicate handling. Among the Dayaks, his name cannot be pronounced without invoking his power. Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Kayanic Dayak people, 19th century.
