"Large Burmese Adorant In Golden Wood"
Votive sculpture of the monk disciple and worshipper Moggallana in lacquered and gilded wood, Burma (Myanmar), Kaunbong period (1752-1885), end of the 19th century. These sculptures were ordered from craftsmen and placed in temples (or private altars) near the Buddha, in order to mark his fervor and devotion with a view to obtaining spiritual merits and thus improving his karma. The back of the monastic robe, normally trailing slightly on the ground, has long since disappeared but the rest of the work is in a very good state of preservation. The intensity of the expression and the contemplative posture are particularly accomplished compared to other worshipper sculptures from the same period. Provenance: Claude de Marteau Collection Sold with certificate of provenance. H 57 cm x W 32 cm x D 43 cm Due to the delicacy of this sculpture (not necessarily fragile) this piece will be exclusively by carrier, delivered packaged on a mini wooden pallet.
