Italian school of the 19th century object of the grand tour, Augustus Prima Porta, bronze proof bears a hallmark traces of gilding, presented on a fluted painted wooden column ht 92cm 40x40 (height bronze plus column 165cm) Augustus is the great-nephew of Julius Caesar. He became emperor in 27 BC. This statue represents him as Imperator, armored like a hero, a cupid on his right side sitting on a dolphin. On his armor is represented the historical scene of the restitution of a standard lost by Crassus in 53 BC, at the Battle of Carrhae. This standard will later be placed in the temple of Mars the Avenger on the Forum of Augustus. The original sculpture is in the Vatican Museums
