Japan, Isho dansu chest of drawers, Sendai region, Meiji period, 19th century. Japanese Isho dansu chest of drawers from the Sendai region of the Meiji period. This single-section tansu of zelkova (keyaki) wood has a characteristic embossed and engraved rectangular lock plate on the top drawer, Mokko (melon) style drawer pulls and drapery, and a hinged door on the right side opening into two drawers. Two side carrying handles. Cypress wood, hinoki, for the inside of the drawers. All iron fittings are original. Japan, 19th century (circa 1850/1880)
