This bust rests on its marble pedestal.
An accident to the right ear to report, the piece was glued back but over time the collage has darkened a little.
Possibility of having the restoration done on the ear at the workshop which would make this small old collage almost invisible.
A bust of great beauty, entirely in the spirit of the Italian antiques of the papal collections.
We see so here a bust portrait of the young nephew of Julius Caesar who later adopted him, changing his name to Caesar Octavian Augustus. Almost all neoclassical sculptures had a model and ours is among the most illustrious: it is a replica of an original work depicting the so-called young Octavian, from the Augustan period, dating back to the end of the 1st century BC.
as evidenced by the portrait of the Julio-Claudian period, sold by the famous Roman sculptor Vincenzo Pacetti (Rome 1746-1820) to the Vatican Museums (inv 714) exhibited at the Pio Clementino Museum.
Everything refers to the portrait of the Augustan period: from the design of the hair, with the strands in the central part in a dovetail, the spacious forehead, the gaze to the posture.
The bust therefore represents the young Octavian (later Augustus Caesar) probably around the years preceding the death of his adoptive father Julius Caesar.
The many harmonious details are of great mastery, the sculptor knew how to give his sculpted model a superb face giving the character the tenderness and the determination of the young man to later become the first emperor of Rome.our Large bust in white Carrara marble sculpted representing the young Augustus, after the ancient bust in the Galleria dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican (no. 714).
