Gold Box Or Snuffbox Decorated With Swans And Daisies, Mid-19th Century
14-carat gold enamel box with hinges and rounded edges. The rectangular lid, resembling a small symbolic painting, depicts a swan perched on a mound in a relief setting of flowers and leaves. This small frame on a matte background is bordered by small, animated lines that at the base will take shape inside the painting to become the swan's pedestal. The base represents a bed of daisies punctuated by a scattering of raised nails on a sandblasted background. As with the lid, it is framed by a dotted pattern that spirals up on two sides to emerge in the painting. Very beautiful enamel inlay technique on a relief background. One cannot help but think of a box expressing feelings of love, given the symbols used (swan, daisy).
