This 19th century interior scene is beautifully made and was painted by E. Picou. Note traces of wear on the frame and traces of moisture in the margin; the watercolor is in good condition. E. Picou for Eugènes Charles Picou, painter born in 1831 in Nantes, inspired by the works of Alexandre Cabanel and also influenced by Jean-Léon Gérome in the creation of his style. His brother Henri-Pierre Picou was 2nd Prix de Rome in 1853, and his teacher Debret was a student of Jacques-Louis David. He achieved a slight renown during his lifetime at the Salon des Artistes Français. Most of his works in public collections are exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, his hometown.
