Object description :

"Post"
This post comes from a Breton collector friend, a doctor in geography who did photographic reports for the magazine "photo" and "géo" in Sudan and brought back several statues, his name will be revealed to the buyer on the certificate. I specify that I am selling it without commission, here is what he told me: The Bongo and Belanda funerary posts of the Wau region are rare because their ethnic groups are particularly few in number. Their sculptures are large, made of dense and heavy wood that resists insects and erosion. Many were destroyed during the war of secession that opposed the North and South of Sudan before the partition of the country. Many were burned by the populations as cooking wood during this war, which makes them particularly rare and precious. The study published in the journal Art Tribal Winter/Spring 1999/2000 counts only a few dozen in public and private collections. Good general condition, estimated dating from the beginning of the last century, height 156 cm.
