Fauvism - Breton Women Preparing For Market - Early 20th Century - Signed

Scene depicting a group of women wearing headdresses in a village square. They seem to be preparing for the market, two of them are arranging their goods in baskets. The scene probably takes place at dawn, as evidenced by the raking and colored light.

This work strikes with its colors, clearly inspired by Fauvism: the shadows are mauve, a house makes its red half-timbering shine, the women wear brightly colored tops, the sky seems to hesitate between pink and blue.

The work is signed C. Roussel lower right, and dated 1906. It is in very good condition. It is offered in a modern frame in gilded stuccoed wood inspired by the 19th century.
