Brother of the sculptor Josep Clara, with whom he traveled to Toulouse and Paris. Settled in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Français in the capital as well as in Madrid and Barcelona.
His works were cast by the Fonderie des Bronzes Artistiques de Paris, and it was in this city that he ran a private academy where he enjoyed a prestige as great as that of his brother.
Joan Clara specialized in the production of small bronzes with childish themes, modeled with fine sensitivity. He represented happy children, laughing in naturalistic attitudes.
This sculptor was able to represent with great realism all the expressions and gestures of the little ones.
And, although his figures preserve the realist tradition of the 19th century, one can appreciate in them, through the spontaneity of the gestures and the treatment of the patinas of the bronzes, a search for freedom that brings the Catalan sculptor closer to the modernist ideals of European artists of the early 20th century.
Joan Clara is currently represented in the Manuel Ramos Andrade Foundation and the Casa Lis Museum of Art Deco and Art Nouveau in Salamanca, among others, as well as in numerous private collections.
