Rare Malagan dance mask collected on the Tabar Islands in Papua New Guinea. This mask, called "Tatanua," represents a person's soul and is used in commemoration ceremonies. These relatively light wooden masks are worn during ritual dances. This one was notably used during a large ceremony held in February 2020 on Tatau Island. Wood, plant fibers (notably coconut and pandanus), coconut bark, pigments, and shells. Sold with a presentation base. Approx. 47 x 44 x 13 cm / €1 800 including base and shipping.
