Object description :

"Domien Van Den Bossche (1854-1906) Imposing Art Nouveau Terracotta Group "
"La Bacchante", an imposing terracotta group bearing the signature of Domien van den Bossche. End of 19th century.

Probably inspired by Carrier Belleuse's "La Bacchante" group from 1863, this terracotta depicts a young nymph dancing to the sound of castanets around a satyr's herm. The group already shows traces of Art Nouveau, notably in the smiling and expressive face of the young nymph and in the emphasis placed on her movement.
In perfect condition, it has never undergone restoration.

BIOGRAPHY
Domien (Dominique) Van den Bossche was a Belgian sculptor born on February 11, 1854 in Ghent and died there on October 30, 1906. He was a pupil of Louis Van Biesbroeck, Theodore Canneel and Pierre De Vigne-Quyo. He also collaborated regularly with the architect Jacob Semey. He created exceptional classical sculptures, both interior and exterior, for the main buildings of Ghent University: the pediment of the façade, allegorical figures for the niches, as well as all sorts of decorative ornaments of his own invention. The large bronze groups that decorate the slaughterhouses of Lille are his work. Van Den Bossche's funerary sculptures in East Flanders are undoubtedly excellent examples of his best work. The medal of honor he created for Dr. Victor Deneffe is on display in the Ghent City Museum.
