Object description :

"Luca Madrassi (1848-1919) Large Art Nouveau Terracotta Sculpture"
Luca Madrassi (1848-1919), large patinated terracotta sculpture in Art Nouveau style, late 19th century.
The sculpture represents a half-naked young woman sitting on a tree holding a mandolin in her left hand. It is signed L. Madrassi-Paris and bears the publisher's stamp on the back (T&M publishers for Théodore and Mundler).

Luca Madrassi was a naturalized French Italian sculptor born on June 8, 1848 in Tricesimo and died April 6, 1919 in Paris. Luca Madrassi began his artistic studies in Rome before studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Pierre-Jules Cavelier, then that of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. Madrassi worked for Carrier-Belleuse, and intermittently between 1876 and 1880 for Gustave Doré. He probably also worked for Antoine Bourdelle. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1874 with his plaster group Le Premier aveu. He received honorable mentions in 1881, 1882, 1883, and 1885, as well as a third-class medal in 1896 for his marble group Noël. His art, influenced by Clodion and Carrier-Belleuse, did not earn him any state commissions, but was successful with private clients. He obtained French nationality and became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1890. He also exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1896. His works were mainly busts, statuettes and allegorical subjects. He collaborated with the earthenware factory Boulenger et Cie in Choisy-le-Roi for which he provided models for statuettes, vases and objets d'art, as well as a monumental earthenware fountain in the neo-rocaille style presented at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris.

Well preserved, original patina, small chips and some signs of age.
