Flemish school, late 17th - early 18th century -
This type of representation was very popular between the 17th and 19th centuries, especially in the Flemish area, but also in the rest of Europe. It is likely that the painting was made in Italy, given the type of houses in the background. Many Flemish painters stopped in Italy, influencing various Italian painters.
On the back of the painting is written Peter Muiler called Captain Tempesta and the title of the work. The writing is recent and engraved in marker. The work was purchased by the previous owner many years ago during an unspecified antiques auction.
- As for the writing, I believe that the author is not the one reported in the writing but rather the style of the aforementioned painter. As previously mentioned, these were very popular representations at the time, made by various painters.
The painting has been cleaned and does not have any particular pictorial restorations, it has an old relining.
