This is a shoemaker, trapped in the hell of Dunkirk, strategic pole of the allied forces on the Flanders front, where fear, shortages, destruction generated by incessant bombings did not really offer the desire to create a small masterpiece of leather, walnut and brass in the form of a pen holder. Dated, located, this little shoe is a marvel of precision which recalls the sacrifice of all these men whose skill was diverted to learn to kill an unknown enemy no more determined than they were to lose their lives for the madness of a few... The hole which holds a pencil upright is made from an "unpercussed" cartridge case....(!)
