Wrought iron and embossed sheet metal strongbox. The sheet metal was obtained from solid metal by hot forging and then carved with a chisel according to the predetermined design layout. The keyhole for inserting the key is located at the center of the lid and is concealed by a retractable cover (a technical secret). The one placed in the center of the front panel is false (a psychological secret). The lock mechanism occupies the entire inner surface of the lid and is of the multiple bolt type. When the key is turned, a complex system of levers simultaneously activates all the spring-loaded bolts arranged in a fan shape along the four perimeter sides of the lock.
This particular multi-bolt locking system was invented in Bavaria, Germany, in the mid-16th century and later spread throughout Europe. The strongbox in question also features a small compartment in the lower left inside corner, protected by a lid with its own spring-bolt lock, typically used to store metal coins and valuable objects.
