His father, Franz Bergmann (September 26, 1838 – 1894), was a professional chaser from Gablonz. He came to Vienna and founded a small bronze manufactory in 1860. Franz Xavier Bergmann inherited the business and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes of the 1900s were still made from models from his father's studio. Bergmann is often mistakenly described as a sculptor, but he was not; he owned a foundry. His studios employed many anonymous sculptors on a temporary basis. Bruno Zach commissioned Bergmann to edit and cast some of his works. At the turn of the 19th century, around fifty studios produced Viennese bronzes. "Cold-painted bronze" refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so-called "powder" paint; the know-how for mixing this type of paint has been lost. The color was not fired, hence the term "cold painting." Painting was primarily done by women working at home, a typical artisanal activity. The sensual poses of young women in the Art Nouveau style were concealed by a veil that revealed everything when a button was pressed or a lever operated.
