"Reliquary – Set Of Two Reliquaries Of The True Cross – Relic – True Cross, Christ – France"
Late 19th century – France Two portable reliquaries of the True Cross, dated to the 19th century, in a beautiful state of preservation. These objects of private devotion, intended for personal use or for religious houses, each contain a substantial fragment of the Holy Cross. The larger of the two, made of solid silver, opens to reveal a delicate composition of rolled and gilded paper, centered around a fragment of wood forming a cross, on a red velvet background. The back of the reliquary contains a handwritten label in French, surrounding a small cross of gilded paper, clearly stating: “Relic of the True Cross.” The wax seal is present, although covered by the paper, and the authentication threads are intact. The second, smaller reliquary, made of white metal, has a similar composition: a visible fragment of wood in the shape of a cross, surrounded by a radiating decoration, mounted under glass. The reverse is also annotated with a handwritten inscription, with a golden cross, designating the relic of the Holy Cross, and also retains its threads and wax seal under the paper. Dimensions: – Large reliquary (in silver) with loop: 3.5 cm – Small reliquary (in white metal) with loop: 2.5 cm Condition: Very good general condition (loop of the largest slightly open).
