A thick section of mother-of-pearl, carved in the shape of a stylised fish, is used as a shank on which the tortoiseshell branch is held by a ligature of plaited plant fibres.
This hook was used for bonito fishing. According to the book Fish Hooks of the Pacific Islands by Daniel Blau and Klaus Maaz, this is a type D hook.
