""in The Hautes-alpes" René Olivier (1874 - 1962)"
René Olivier (1874 - Born in Elbeuf (Seine-Inférieure), René Olivier came from a background of textile industrialists. He began his own career there and only approached painting relatively late, training in his hometown first with Berthe Mouchel and then in Paris (Académie Julian, Académie de la Grande Chaumière). For a short time, he was part of the XXX, a group of young artists attached to the Rouen School, then moved to Paris to follow other masters: Lucien Simon, René-Xavier Prinet, André Dauchez... Settled in the capital where he had his studio, he worked there in complete independence while remaining faithful to a group of artists with the most diverse talents: Félicien Cacan, Jean-Gabriel Goulinat, Henri Deluermoz, Gustave Jaulmes, Maurice Berty ... Travels to Holland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, and France (mainly Massif central, Dauphiné and Haute Provence) give René Olivier the main theme of his paintings, but he is also an observer of Paris and its events. A draftsman, his pencils or charcoals also willingly leave room for the presence of man, giving life to the Parisian buildings he represents. The artist also practiced decorative painting, with projects and achievements both for villas on the Normandy coast, as well as for religious buildings. A painter of the harsh territories of the interior and the mountains (Massif Central, Alps, Castile...), René Olivier also exhibited at the Salon des Peintres de montagne. René Olivier had married Marie-Louise Lustremant in 1921, herself a painter. He was a cousin of Louis Olivier.
