Object description :

"Jean Victor Bertin And His Workshop Oil On Canvas Signed And Dated "
"Jean-Victor Bertin (1767-1842) and workshop - Landscape of the Ile de France" Jean-Victor BERTIN and workshop signed 1821(1767, Paris – 1842, Paris)Oil on canvasH. 32.5cm; W. 46 cmJean-Victor Bertin can probably be placed, after his master Valenciennes, in the second rank of the so-called "neo-classical" French landscape artists of the end of the 18th century and the first third of the 19th century, ahead of Bidauld, Dunouy, Chauvin and Boguet. Among his best-known students are Corot, Michallon, Daubigny. Bertin often produced several copies of his compositions, a reflection of their success, sometimes in quite large numbers. These reworks, which art historian Suzanne Gutwirth considered to be Bertin's late (1830s) "supply" works to compensate for his financial difficulties and declining success, seem rather to have been made at the time of the original composition, in Bertin's studio. This studio thus had not only an educational role with many students, but also a vocation to participate in the creation of replicas. Some were signed by Bertin, others not, which does not mean that they were not by his hand, at least in part. We find in our painting Bertin's great sense of light and his very precise treatment of foliage. The painting has been relined, we have kept its original stretcher. The canvas is from the Giroux house
