A 17th-century Sicilian rosary with silver filigree beads and 72 faceted rough ruby beads weighing approximately 220 carats. In the center, an enamel depicting San Placido. A precious and rare object. Rosaries were usually made with faceted garnets. Much rarer and more precious are rosaries with rough emeralds, and extremely rare are those, like this one, made with rough natural rubies. This rosary surely belonged to a pope or a very wealthy nobleman who spared no expense for the salvation of his soul...
