This small oil on paper, with a bucolic subject, is signed Prévot-Valéri. The subject represented is recurrent in this painter's work, a threatening stormy sky at dusk, a shepherdess who accompanies her flock, a lantern in her hand, in a wild moor. This painting is similar to the work exhibited at the 1908 salon entitled: "Fleeing the storm". Auguste Prévot-Valéri, whose real name was Valéri Prévost, was born of an unknown father on January 21, 1857 in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, he is the son of Élisabeth Prévost, a servant. He is the father of the painter André Prévot-Valéri 1890-1959. A student of Antoine Guillemet and Jules Lefebvre, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1884 to 1929, he participated in the 1900 Universal Exhibition where he received a bronze medal, in 1887 he was awarded a medal of honor at the Salon, a third-class medal in 1895, a second-class medal in 1898 and obtained the Rosa Bonheur prize in 1908. Various museums conserve his works, the Municipal Museum of Coulommiers, the Museum of Fine Arts of Dijon, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nancy, the Petit Palais in Paris, the Museum of the Hotel Sandelin in Saint-Omer and the Museum of Art of Toulon.
