Object description :

"Louis Raoul Guiraud 1888-1976. Devil's Bridge Over The Hérault 1931. Divisionist, Béziers Causse"
Superb oil/wood panel by Louis Raoul Guiraud depicting an old bridge in the Hérault in 1931, I think it could be the Devil's Bridge spanning the Hérault between the towns of Aniane and Saint Jean de Fos. Signed and dated lower left, an old label mark torn off on the back. Size of the painting alone 65x45cm and 77x57 cm including frame. This is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition with a pointillist tendency by Louis Raoul Guiraud, dated 1931, the artist's mature period where he used his definitive touch which oscillates between impressionism and fauvism with divided touches and other broader ones; as for his palette, it is here of great subtlety where a range of greens rubs shoulders with blues, yellows, orange and gray. He often painted his adopted Hérault where he spent most of his life, in fact he painted many views of Béziers, Montpellier and their surroundings, but he also traveled by going to paint in Collioure, Marseille, Paris, but also in Poland during the war, in North Africa too. Guiraud is finally known for having decorated several famous monuments of Béziers, but also for having painted the cycle of the vine, in this regard, a painting / canvas of 397 x 234 cm was sold for more than 81000€ on March 3, 2006 at Aguttes at Drouot. I no longer present Louis Raoul Guiraud born in Cerbère died in Béziers who is today one of the most famous painters of Languedoc / Rousillon with Marcel Causse, Bésiné, Louis Paul etc ... Friend of FM Roganeau, influenced by Montézin and Henri Martin. There is also an excellent book on this artist that I recommend you buy or go see. Finally, the best way to see a more complete biography on the artist is to go see it on the internet, I put the link below: https://www.etudesheraultaises.fr/publi/lherault-vu-par-raoul-guiraud-un-naturaliste-biterrois-cerbere-1888-beziers-1976/ This painting on panel is in very good condition, a light cleaning could perhaps do it some good but that's all. Delivered in its very beautiful period carved frame, I am certain of it because we can still see traces of the paint on the edges, it is quite possible that the painter painted this painting while framed.
