Beautiful and rare work by the Armentiérois painter François Charles Baude which represents a view of the porcelain market on the square of the Saint-Vaast church in Armentières. We can notice, in the background behind the houses on the church square, the bell tower of the Armentières Town Hall.
The artist took particular care in the realization of this composition: the characters are finely made, the porcelain, the copper pots and the strands of straw in particular are perfectly represented. The play of light and the choice of colors are also perfectly mastered, giving life to his composition. This animated composition of numerous characters, under the sun of a beautiful day, is a rare testimony of the city of Armentières before the destruction of the First World War.
In 1926, the artist exhibited at the Salon des artistes Lillois "The market place of the church in Armentières before the war", it could be our work.
We can compare our work to a similar composition, on the same subject with some variations, kept at the town hall of Armentières (see photo).
A student at the Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts, Charles François Baude perfected his skills at the Académie Julian under the teaching of the painter William Bouhuereau and at the studio of Marcel Baschet and Henri Royer. In 1906, he participated in the first round of the Prix de Rome whose subject was "Christ served by the angels". He will be 14th out of 218.
With a resounding success at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1911, Charles François Baude received a travel grant in 1912 and went to Algeria and then exhibited in Lille, Ghent, Amsterdam and Brussels.
His works are preserved in particular in the Collection of the City of Paris, the Ministry of the Interior, the Dunkirk Museum, the Simu Museum in Bucharest and in the Wanamaker Collection in New York.
