The model for the Vignot Fisherwoman in Puys was born from the artist’s encounter with a young fisherwoman. Very ill, Carpeaux stayed in Puys (near Dieppe), where his friend Alexandre Dumas gave him a studio. In a letter to Bruno Chérier he describes his encounter with the young girl whom he then invited to pose for him: “... I saw from the top of the carriage an admirable leg emerging in the movement of walking, from under rags that only reached down to the knees…”.
This model was the last he produced for publication before his death the following year. It was used by his workshop from 1875. Related work: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux,
