"Silver And Glass Cruet – Brussels, Circa 1748–1750 Petrus Augustinus Ivens – Reference Item"
Silver and glass cruet – Brussels, circa 1748–1750 Petrus Augustinus Ivens – Piece referenced and illustrated in the reference work on Brussels goldsmithing Exceptional silver and cut glass cruet, in the Brussels Rococo style, made by the goldsmith Petrus Augustinus Ivens, active in Brussels in the mid-18th century. This rare and documented piece is precisely the one listed under number 153 in the reference work devoted to goldsmithing with hallmarks in Brussels, page 165, from a prestigious private collection in the capital. It is therefore a referenced example, historically established and preserved in its original condition, with its two period cruets in engraved glass. The structure consists of two circular silver baskets, resting on eight feet in the shape of a stylized crowbar, enhanced with mascarons and leaves. Each frame features prominent molding and rocaille openwork. A small central openwork shaft connects the two baskets, topped with a handle formed by volutes. Two small chains hold the original glass stoppers, elegantly suspended. The rich but balanced decoration combines stylized plant elements and an architectural structure, in a spirit typical of Brussels production around 1748–1750.
