"Gold Wax Case, Paris, Louis XVI Period (circa 1783–1786)"
Gold wax case, Paris, Louis XVI period (circa 1783–1786) Refined and of high quality, this elegant guilloché gold wax case dates from the end of the reign of Louis XVI, between 1783 and 1786. It bears the hallmarks of the city of Paris as well as the discharge mark of the tax collector Henri Clavel, in office precisely during this period. Made of 916 thousandths gold, this aristocratic writing object features a chased and guilloché decoration with alternating floral and geometric motifs, punctuated by highlights of chased foliage on an matte background. With its octagonal section, the case presents a beautiful balance of proportions and a decorative harmony characteristic of luxury Parisian productions under Louis XVI. It opens onto an interior fully hallmarked, both in the body and in the cap. The octagonal seal, located at the end, was later engraved with an interlaced number “BM”, which can be erased or replaced by an engraved stone or a coat of arms according to the collector’s wishes. The weight of 37.7 grams attests to the quality and density of the manufacturing. In very good condition, this wax case represents a precious testimony to the art of living at court or in circles close to power in the 18th century.
