A versatile artist, Pierre Gusman is particularly known for his talents as an engraver, particularly on wood. For the portrait of Marcelle Tinayre (1870-1948), successful writer and wife of his fellow engraver Julien Tinayre (1859-1923), he uses the etching technique here.
The Inventaire du fonds français après 1800 lists a portrait of Marcelle Tinayre in etching of the second state dating from 1910 (Volume X, p. 65, no. 56).
