"Luminist Painting "the Pond" By Roger Maximilien Dubois Circa 1910 "
Artist: Roger Maximilien Dubois (1894-1918), Belgium Oil on cardboard Period: circa 1910 Dimensions with frame: 40.5 x 35 cm Signature: lower right Provenance: label of the prestigious Galerie B Geerinckx, Brussels Style: Luminism --- “The Pond” – A rare masterpiece of Belgian Luminism Treat yourself to a piece of eternity with “The Pond” by Roger Maximilien Dubois, an exceptional work that embodies all the poetry of Belgian Luminism. This painting on cardboard, in an intimate format (27 x 22 cm without frame), invites you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of an aquatic landscape bathed in light. A true hymn to nature, this painting seduces with the delicacy of its palette and the subtlety of its play of light. With a sure touch, Dubois blends deep greens and shimmering blues to evoke the changing reflections of the water, while vibrant touches suggest the abundant life of the surrounding flora. Water lilies, reeds, and aquatic plants are revealed in a harmonious composition, where every detail demonstrates rare technical mastery. The omnipresent light envelops the scene in a soft and melancholic atmosphere, perhaps that of twilight or a dawn. Dubois succeeds here in conveying pure emotion, transporting the viewer to a haven of peace, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. With its confidential size, "The Pond" invites close contemplation, revealing all the finesse of the artist's gesture. More than a simple work, it is a true window onto the beauty and serenity of nature, a call to reverie and meditation. --- Roger Maximilien Dubois – A dazzling destiny, a luminous body of work Born in Arlon in 1894, Roger Maximilien Dubois demonstrated exceptional talent at an early age, which he honed at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Passionate about color and light, he quickly established himself as one of the young hopes of Belgian Luminism. His virtuosity earned him the composition prize for his anatomy study, a testament to his high standards and artistic rigor. Sadly, the First World War abruptly interrupted his promising career. A volunteer for military service, Dubois died prematurely, swept away by the Spanish flu at just 24 years old, in September 1918. His work, long kept confidential, is now recognized thanks to the work of Serge Goyens de Heusch, who in "Impressionism and Fauvism in Belgium" (1988) established him as one of the great representatives of Luminism. --- Belgian Luminism – Light as a Language A leading movement in Belgian painting, Luminism is distinguished by a luminous and vibrant pictorial style, inherited from Impressionism but endowed with its own identity. Luminist artists, like Émile Claus and Dubois, celebrated the natural light, warmth, and vitality of their country's landscapes. In "The Pond," Dubois expresses this quest for light and serenity with rare sensitivity. Each brushstroke, each nuance, contributes to creating an enveloping atmosphere, conducive to contemplation and escape.
