"Modernist Composition By Laszlo Barta 1902-1961"
oil on canvas measuring 54cm x 65cm plus modern frame 70cm x 84cmsigned lower right BARTA and dated 1947Very beautiful modernist composition with a magic of colors, a painting bordering on abstraction with a character in the middle, I have the impression that it is a worker resting in the middle of a construction site with a wheelbarrow on the rightvery good conditionBorn in 1902 in Hungary, Laszlo BARTA attended the Fine Arts School of Budapest, where he received the prize in 1925. He left his country very quickly because of his political convictions and his membership in the Jewish community.Arriving in France in 1926, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1927 until 1938, as well as at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1927 and 1928.During the second World War I, he took refuge in Corsica in Saint Florent, where he joined the Resistance under the name of "Brutus". He was arrested and imprisoned in Italy in 1943. At the end of the war in 1948, he was naturalized French for acts of resistance. Arriving in St Tropez in 1930, he married a young woman from Toulon in 1947 and they made their house a sort of phalanstery. A much-loved figure in the village, he was close to Robert Baudinière. Mosaics would become his main means of expression from the 1950s. He received several commissions for schools, in Paris, in Saint Lô, but also at the National Museum of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, in Salisbury. He will collaborate with Raymond SUBE in the creation of furniture. His painting, initially figurative, close to the Fauves, is very inspired by the landscapes of Saint Tropez, but his meeting with Albert GLEIZES definitively orients him towards an art closer to cubism and abstraction. He died in 1961 in Saint Tropez where he is buried. An exhibition was held in Saint Tropez in 2022 where he was honored. A large painting has just sold in Budapest for more than 20,000 euros. The Galerie Guardia du Castellet is specialized and permanently presents his works. Sold with certificate of authenticity. Free shipping for the European Union. 280 €uros for International.
