French Gilt and Silvered Bronze Table Mirror with Polychrome Enamel – Circa 1880

An elegant French table mirror from the Napoleon III period, crafted circa 1880 in the manner of the prestigious Parisian workshops of Ferdinand Barbedienne and Maison Alphonse Giroux.

The oval bevelled mirror plate is surrounded by a broad border of polychrome cloisonné enamel, finely decorated with flowers and scrolling foliage in a rich palette of turquoise blue, cobalt blue, pink, red and white.

The finely chased gilt-bronze frame is embellished with floral garlands and surmounted by an ornamental cartouche bearing the monogram “D”, most likely corresponding to the original owner or the person for whom the mirror was commissioned.

The mirror is supported on either side by two finely modelled putti in silvered bronze. The contrast between the gilt-bronze frame, the silvered figures and the brightly coloured enamels gives the piece exceptional decorative richness and refinement.

The quality of the chasing and the sophisticated combination of gilt bronze, silvered bronze and polychrome enamel reflect the craftsmanship of the leading Parisian luxury workshops during the second half of the 19th century.
