A rare patina, due to the years accompanies it, the reverse (see photos) retaining its old colors.
Gashghai or Kashkaï carpet decorated with 3 medallions with stairs, placed on a midnight blue field covered with flowers, stylized animals, trees of life, ..... the whole surrounded by a border with geometric decoration
The weft of these old carpets is in dyed wool, almost always in red brown or brown, curry, passing twice after each line of knots. The thickness of old Kachkaï is always fine, three to four mm, which differs from contemporary carpets, thick with a loose pile. Beautiful model with muted faded but luminous colors, from the 19th century, measuring, 152 cm wide by 213 cm long.
In wool on wool of high quality, originating from the region of Shiraz in Persia, today Iran in very good condition, due to its great age but presenting a superb chromatic wear of use.
The mixed hair fringes are in good condition, they often contain goat wool, sheep, camel, horsehair, a mixture that is found in most ethnic rugs from Iran, Central Asia, the Caucasus but also the Maghreb.
The muted colors, earth, midnight blue contrast with the clear ones, indigot, white, pink, orange, curry, mustard, placed on the dark field, causing a luminous contrast.
These old rugs are essentially dyed with natural products, minerals and plants, which is why today, the colors are still present. The design of great complexity, reveals many tribal motifs and other stylized plants that are always found on these rugs.
Two braids, blue, run along the border and compose the symbol of water, of eternity in a crenellated way, of stylized flowers, round and square and decorate the perimeter with elegance.
The border with many frames has the motif called "Ashkhali" formed by a series of diamonds linked together by a polychrome bar. The edge of the antique carpets of this family is always colored, blue, red or brown.
We find in our model, silhouettes of roosters, which suggests the paradise of Zoroaster, the immortality which will reward the one who observes with zeal the imposed religious practices.
These very beautiful tribal carpets are knotted in the region of Shiraz, region located near the ancient Persepolis which gave its name to Persia, nowadays, Iran. Shiraz is in the province of Fars where the Gashghai tribes reside and still produce today, carpets under the two names, Shiraz or Ghashghai.
Kachkaï carpets are also called Turki-Chiraz and represent the most appreciated pieces of ancient Shiraz production.
## Antique Kachkaï like our model whose polychromy is warm and harmonious and the knotting fine and tight, are often also referred to as "Shiraz of Mecca". This name was intended to inform the buyer about the high quality of the carpet, worthy of serving as a gift for the Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
In view of all these aforementioned elements, we are in front of a very beautiful ethnic carpet, certainly worn and faded, knotted several decades ago with passion and devotion, and meeting the criteria of very beautiful Kachkaï.
