"Cagnes-sur-mer"
Beautiful oil on cardboard signed by Emile Wéry (Reims 1868 - Gressy 1935), representing a view of Cagnes-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes) at the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Reims in 1868, Emile Wéry was a great friend of Henri Matisse throughout his youth. In the 1890s, the two young painters had adjoining studios on Boulevard Montparnasse in Paris, and they even went on a trip to Brittany together in 1896. But their opposing views on art later created a rift between them, with Wéry rejecting the artistic evolution of the early 20th century. In 1923, in the magazine "Le Pampre", he published an article in which he spoke out against "the decadence and corruption of new artistic conceptions". This does not prevent him from having a modern and colorful naturalist style, heir to a late impressionism. He also had as students great modern painters like Raoul Dufy (1877 - 1953) or Othon Friesz (1879-1949). In 1910, he came to settle in Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Auguste Renoir. He bought an old mill in Hauts-de-Cagnes which he named "La Maison rouge" and which he decorated with frescoes. It is from this period that our view of Cagnes dates. He left the South in 1932 to end his life in Gressy (Seine-et-Marne) not far from Meaux. It is there that he died in 1935. Dimensions: 30 x 42 cm
