Victorian Dressing Table. Mahogany, Metal, Glass. England, 19th Century.
Victorian dressing table. Mahogany, metal, glass. England, 19th century.
A carved mahogany dressing table with turned front legs like banded columns topped with vase-shaped forms, a drawer at the front and a recessed upper body with three drawers on each side and a closed space in the center under the rectangular mirror, which has been enhanced with openwork vegetal decorations on the sides and a small tuft of architectural motifs on the top. The Victorian style is known as the style imposed during the reign of Victoria I of Great Britain around the second half of the 19th century, popular in the country and very influential beyond its borders. The clean lines help to highlight the grain of the wood, of high quality, and hark back to a long tradition of English furniture, almost always characterized by fewer decorative elements than French furniture. -
