Object description :

"Virgin And Child In Polychromed And Gilded Wood - Champagne, 16th Century"
With great delicacy, this beautiful Virgin and Child in polychromed and gilded wood is distinguished by the elegance of her pose, the finely pleated tunic falling from her hips, and the heavy mantle whose flowing folds gently enliven her silhouette.
Carved in the purest tradition of the Champagne school in the early 16th century, she captivates with the perfect oval of her face, framed by two long, thick twisted locks of hair, her elongated almond-shaped eyes, and her small, slightly pouting mouth.
These characteristics closely connect her to some of the finest examples of this prestigious group, such as the Virgin and Child of Verrières, that of Villy-le-Maréchal, and one from a chapel in Saint-Pantaléon of Troyes.
Her restrained posture, the elegance of her garments, and the touching emotion expressed in her features make her a work of rare grace.
