"Antique Ebonite Mirror Frame Napoleon III Circa 1850-1860 19th Century "
Antique Napoleon III style ebonite mirror frame circa 1860. Decorated with scrollwork and featuring a lady in profile in a cartouche, two small round feet at the bottom. Sliding wooden system at the back for hanging or placing. Good condition, note a small lack on the wooden rear foot without impacting stability. Dimensions 27 x 19 cm. Full of charm. Note: ebonite was invented by Charles Goodyear around 1839 by subjecting natural rubber to a prolonged (and extreme) vulcanization process. Its color, similar to that of ebony, is the origin of its name. Applications (from 1844 to 1860) can be found on musical instruments and pipe stems showing that ebonite is a substitute for wood with the same polishing properties.
