"Henri Malfroy (1895-1945) Pair Of Canvases Views Of The Port Of Martigues Provence 19th Century Marseille "
Martigues is one of the favorite subjects of Provençal artists and the great source of inspiration of Henri Malfroy who, like his father Charles and his friend Félix Ziem, lived there and depicted it many times. This pair of paintings represents two views of the port with the fishing boats returning from fishing. Signatures lower left. Henri Malfroy was born in Martigues on January 15, 1895 and died on April 27, 1945. He is in the post-impressionist line of Jean-Baptiste Olive. Attracted by the light of the Mediterranean ports, he excels in views of the Côte d'Azur and the Bouches-du-Rhône, in particular the port of Martigues and the various ports around the Etang de Berre, Istres, Port de Bouc etc. He also painted some paintings of Venice. He demonstrates virtuosity in atmospheric effects with a talent for color. He is often confused with his father, Charles Malfroy, whose subjects and technique are very similar.
