In 1807, he was sent to Constantinople to organize the Turkish artillery and distinguished himself in the defense of the Dardanelles against the British fleet. He received the 15th wound of his career at Waterloo on June 18, 1815. His funeral on November 30, 1825, was attended by a huge crowd and his remains received military honors. The procession led by his three sons and his friend Casimir Perier left the mortuary at 62 rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin early in the afternoon. After a sober religious ceremony at the Notre-Dame de Lorette church, the funeral procession, followed by 60,000 to 100,000 people, reached the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
