Depicting a Young Woman Putting on Stockings painted in 1926.
This young person was called Suzy and was a resident of a Brussels “house”. It seems that she was very popular with artists because Jules Van de Leene (1887-1962) painted her portrait the same year. Painting that I have, titled “Suzy” on the back, of which I have attached a photo for comparison.
Fernand Scouflaire, 1885-1948, Belgian painter and engraver, he also created theater sets and costumes. A student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, he also attended the Privat-Livemont workshop. He chose landscapes, marginal characters and nudes as his subjects, but also cabaret scenes and clowns. His works, with a powerful and synthetic style, reveal cubist influences and exude sadness and melancholy. He was also known as an actor and theater director under the name of Léane. Artist listed in Bénézit, Arto and Piron, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
