"Museum - Snuffbox, Corozo Shaker - Hunter With Dog And Rifle - Folk Art"
Dating: Second half of the 19th century Origin: France Small snuffbox known as a “secouette”, finely carved from corozo (seed of the ivory palm), a material appreciated in the 19th century for the fineness of its grain, close to ivory. This pocket-sized object, both utilitarian and ornamental, is part of the tradition of small works of patience and folk art. The high-relief scene depicts a hunter with a rifle, in a dynamic posture, accompanied by his dog in pursuit of the game. The background evokes a schematized forest landscape. On the body of the container, stylized vine leaves and plant scrolls complete the engraved decoration. The lid is carved with a spiral motif, finished with a grip button. This type of object, carried in a pocket, was used to contain dry tobacco, and sometimes powders. They are found in rural collections, often given as gifts between men or made during long periods of idleness: convalescence, wintering, or military mobilization. Very expressive work, probably made by a skilled craftsman or amateur Dimensions: 8 cm Condition: beautiful patina of use, visible but stable tension cracks, fitted lid.
