Below the base, the inscription reads: Tokyo Imperial Foundry.
The Tokyo Infantry Arsenal Gun Factory was established in 1909 to meet the needs of the Russo-Japanese War.
In addition to weaponry, it cast public monuments; members of the government, clans, and artists of the Imperial Household had the privilege of commissioning bronze castings.
- A dedication at the front of the terrace: this sculpture was presented by a certain Oohno to General Yoshikazu Nishi (1878-1941). He was aide-de-camp to Emperor Taisho from 1919-26, then director of the War College and commander of the Tokyo security forces.
- The sculptor did not sign his name, but the style could be compared to that of Takero Shinkai (1868-1927), sculptor to the Imperial Household, specializing in equestrian art. (For example, the stylization of the mane with a few finger marks, the melted appearance of the hooves.)
A note on the Foundry, the general, and this sculptor will be provided to the buyer.
