André Brasilier was born in 1929 in Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) to painter parents. He spent his childhood in the family manor in Meigné-le-Vicomte. In 1948, he entered the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He won the first Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1953, which allowed him to stay at the Villa Medici from 1954 to 1957. From 1958, exhibitions followed one another and the painter quickly acquired international renown. In 2005, an exceptional tribute: the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg dedicated a retrospective of his entire work to him. The three dominant themes of André Brasilier's work: horses, femininity, landscapes.
