Mythological Genre Scene Roman Charity 17th Century Unsigned Rt1252

Framed oil on canvas, depicting a scene known as: ''Roman Charity'': a young girl, Pero, secretly breastfeeds her father, Cimon, in prison, who is condemned to die of starvation.
Pero obtains permission to visit her father, but the guards ensure that she does not bring him any food.
Since the old man does not die, one of the guards keeps watch and notices that Pero is breastfeeding his father.
The praetor and the judges, warned, decide to release the prisoner.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, many European artists depicted this scene, this story is reported with many variations that present it as an exemplary act of filial piety.
It is a touching scene that still inspires 20th century artists like John Steinbeck who ends his work The Grapes of Wrath with an evocation of Roman charity.
