Rops - Tribute To Pan
Artist: Félicien Rops (namur, 1833 – Corbeil-essonnes, 1898)
Homage to Pan 1900Color heliogravure on vellum, engraved by A. Bertrand, Pellet publisher, Paris. The work of the Belgian engraver Félicien Rops is characterized by a complex aesthetic, mixing beauty and grotesque, sensuality and spirituality. He explores the themes of death, sin, temptation, often represented through enigmatic and sensual female figures. Our engraving, entitled Homage to Pan, served as a frontispiece for the book 'Curieuse' by Joséphin Péladan. A plate was engraved by Bertrand, after the drawing, for the ultimate Parisian, G. Pellet in 1900 (see cat. no. 191 and no. 373 of the Félicien Rops exhibition, Paris, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 1985).
