Also known as “saf,” prayer rugs, prayer mats, and prayer kilims are all similar in that they are used almost exclusively for the purpose of prayer and designed exclusively for that purpose. Since prayer is almost always done in groups with prayer rugs lined up next to each other, the symmetry formed by the rugs’ patterns is one of their most important characteristics. Konya is an important city in central Turkey, located at the southwest end of the Central Anatolian Plateau, and the capital of Konya Province. During ancient times and up until the Seljuk period, it was known as Iconium.
