In the ancient myth of the "Judgment of Paris," the three goddesses—Athena, goddess of wisdom, Hera, goddess of marriage and fertility, and Aphrodite, goddess of love—compete to determine who is the most beautiful. It is the mortal Paris who must decide by giving a golden apple, the "apple of discord," to the winner. He ultimately chooses Aphrodite, who had promised him in return the most beautiful woman: Helen. The consequence of this contest was Helen's abduction and the outbreak of the Trojan War.
This 19th-century mythological painting depicts the Judgment of Paris in a landscape with two trees behind the figures, featuring:
the three most important goddesses of Olympus: Aphrodite, the winner holding the apple of discord; Hera with the peacock on the left; and Athena,
Paris, Trojan prince and youngest son of King Priam and Hecuba, and
Cupid, son of Venus, god of Love, holding the arrow of love.
This painting from the Baroque period is reminiscent of the works of the great masters of the Baroque era (1600–1750), more specifically of the Italian Baroque style. It closely resembles the works of great Italian Baroque painters such as Francesco Albani (1578–1660) and Guido Reni (1575–1642). It also vaguely evokes the work of Simon Vouet (1590–1649), although he has no known compositions on this subject or similar compositions.
