Petrified Ghostly Figure, Bronze 1960s #536
This small figure protects its face, its body ravaged and frozen. It can be seen as a work linked to the "ghostly beauty" that emerged after 1945. The figure, frozen by nuclear fire, evokes a petrified figure from Pompeii. The antique brown/green patina accentuates this aesthetic connection between two ancient and modern catastrophes. From 1945 onward, an artistic movement emerged: the search for a "skeletal, angry, ghostly" beauty. These were unsettling works that shattered classical figuration. For example, in painting, there was the Gutai style. Butoh, the "dance of the dark body," also played a role. Traditional arts seemed powerless to express the tragedy of 1945.
