Evocative Dutch antique chest, entirely crafted from repoussé metal and dated 1912, signed by J. Veneman – Almelo, a town in the Netherlands renowned for its artisanal tradition during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This piece combines popular art with a tribute to the Dutch monarchy. The front panel features Princess Juliana, born in 1909 and the only daughter of Queen Wilhelmina, who ruled the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948. Juliana’s birth was highly celebrated across the country as a symbol of dynastic continuity, following years of uncertainty due to the lack of a direct heir. Her image was widely commemorated in decorative and artisanal works of the time.

One of the short sides portrays the Crucifixion of Christ, while the other panels illustrate scenes of rural life, with men and women depicted working or gathering in farm environments—an homage to the agrarian identity of early 20th-century Dutch society.

The interior, lacquered in a vivid carmine red, houses an extraordinary wrought iron locking mechanism, finely decorated with a cherub and engraved with the artist’s signature: J. VENEMAN 1912 – ALMELO

Equipped with a decorative iron handle and a functioning key lock, this chest is a rare testimony to Northern European craftsmanship from the early 1900s. Perfect for collectors of historical objects, antique mechanisms, or Flemish applied arts, and ideal for furnishing eclectic or gothic-inspired interiors.
